چکیده

Re arride describes dic general metbods and sorne of the resutts obrained lix dic Psychophysiology Laboratory of the tJniversliy of La Coruña. The paper covers our research on the Simon effect and accessory effect, although it is nor a review of dic literature. Ihe research strategy we followed is huiit around the ose of laterajized motor potentials recorded from scalp. These measures allow observing the way responses are selecred anó w}len they are selecred. providing an invaluable Loo~ to study response interference and ro split reaction time jato two halves. The research on the Simon effect conclodes [barinterference during response selection is critical in the Simon effect bur it ~sdubious xvhether Ibis process should be considered al automatie anó stimulus-drive,t as is wideiy accepted. Ihe experiments with rhe accessory effect indicate Ihar facilitation is produced before response selection is oven which ends a long controversy about dic locos of dic accessory effect. Constraints on awareness, attention, processing, and memory: some recent investigations with ignored speech.

We discuss potential benefits of research in which attention is directed toward or away from a spoken channel and measures of the allocation of attention are used. This type of research is relevant to at least two basic, still-unresolved issues in cognitive psychology: (a) the extent to which unattended information is processed and (b) the extent to which unattended information that is processe...

Automatic processing of unattended lexical information in visual oddball presentation: neurophysiological evidence

Previous electrophysiological studies of automatic language processing revealed early (100-200 ms) reflections of access to lexical characteristics of speech signal using the so-called mismatch negativity (MMN), a negative ERP deflection elicited by infrequent irregularities in unattended repetitive auditory stimulation. In those studies, lexical processing of spoken stimuli became manifest as ...

lecting a fraction of the multitude of information that is available to the visual system at any one instant in time. Much recent research has been devoted to understanding the psychological and neural processes underlying the attentional selection of incoming information (Corbetta & Shulman, 2002; Reynolds & Heeger, 2009; Shomstein & Yantis, 2006; Yantis et al., 2002), but there still remains ...

Attention and the Speed of Information Processing: Posterior Entry for Unattended Stimuli Instead of Prior Entry for Attended Stimuli

Why are nearly simultaneous stimuli frequently perceived in reversed order? The origin of errors in temporal judgments is a question older than experimental psychology itself. One of the earliest suspects is attention. According to the concept of prior entry, attention accelerates attended stimuli; thus they have "prior entry" to perceptive processing stages, including consciousness. Although l...

Exogenous capture of medial-frontal oscillatory mechanisms by unattended conflicting information.

A long-standing debate in psychology and cognitive neuroscience concerns the way in which unattended information is processed and influences goal-directed behavior. Although selective attention allows us to filter out task-irrelevant information, there is a substantial number of unattended, yet relevant, events that must be evaluated in a flexible manner so that appropriate behaviors can succee...
